    Cook Without Guarding Every Counter

A stolen sandwich is frustrating. A dog grabbing bones, medication, or hot food can become an emergency. Partners Dogs helps you create a kitchen routine that works even when your attention is elsewhere.

    What you may be seeing

    Common signs

    • Paws or nose on counters, tables, sinks, or stovetops
    • Checking surfaces when people leave the room
    • Stealing food, wrappers, utensils, or dishes
    • Hovering during cooking and ignoring a bed or mat
    • Moving chairs or using nearby objects to reach food

    Seek help now

    • Ingestion of chocolate, xylitol, medication, cooked bones, or another toxic item
    • Swallowing packaging, cloth, utensils, or objects that may obstruct the gut
    • Burns, cuts, or a fall while reaching a surface
    • Growling or biting when an item is removed

Mild is a starting point for planning, not a diagnosis. Suspected poisoning, obstruction, or injury requires immediate veterinary guidance.

    Understanding the behavior

    What is counter surfing?

Counter surfing is a high-payoff habit. One successful grab can reward many failed attempts, so the behavior survives even when the counter is usually empty. Dogs also learn exactly when people are distracted or leave the room.

Training works best when management removes surprise rewards. Food, medication, knives, and packaging stay out of reach while the dog learns a reliable leave it, a calm station outside the work area, and boundaries that make sense in daily life.

The goal is not constant correction. It is a safer kitchen where your dog has a clear job and you can turn your back without panic. Many dogs improve when access and reinforcement change together, though reliability still depends on practice and household consistency.

Partners Dogs has trained Arizona dogs through every kind of counter surfing case since 1997, at our Scottsdale and Cave Creek facilities. Lifetime trainer support is included with every board-and-train program.

    What our clients say

“"We have a Great Dane. Counter height was not a meaningful barrier. I had accepted this as my life until a friend told me about Partners. Foundation Camp was a revelation, they built a kitchen behavior that actually holds. He has a 'place' spot in the corner of our kitchen now and he goes there every time I start cooking. I cooked Thanksgiving dinner this year without incident for the first time in three years."”

    Meredith L.

“"My lab stole an entire rotisserie chicken off the counter while I was answering the door. I was annoyed about the chicken but honestly more scared about what else she might take when I wasn't watching. Foundation Camp gave her a solid 'leave it' and a much better relationship with self-control in general. The counter surfing stopped."”

    Frequently asked questions

    Can counter surfing be improved?

In most cases, yes. With a structured plan and steady follow-through, counter surfing usually improves and becomes much more manageable. How far and how fast depends on the dog and the household, and severe cases start with an in-person assessment.

How long does it take to see change?

Many dogs show early progress in the first weeks of a program, though the timeline varies with the behavior and the dog. The lasting value is in the follow-up: private lessons and group classes help the change hold at home over time.

What if my dog has more than one issue?

That is very common. During the assessment we identify every area of concern and build one plan that works on them together, rather than treating each in isolation.

Is professional training worth the cost?

It is an investment in daily life for you and your dog. Our board-and-train programs include weeks of follow-up, private lessons, and group classes so the results last, and financing is available up to 36 months.

    When can we get started?

Right away. Schedule a call or take the PD360 assessment online and we will find the best time to begin, starting with a clear look at your dog's counter surfing.
