    What you may be seeing

    Common signs

    • Persistent scanning, pacing, panting, trembling, or shadowing
    • Startling at ordinary sounds or movement
    • Difficulty resting even in familiar places
    • Avoiding new people, locations, surfaces, or routine changes
    • Stress that carries over long after a trigger has passed

    Seek help now

    • Self-injury, escape attempts, or panic that cannot be interrupted safely
    • Refusing food or water, severe sleep disruption, or inability to eliminate normally
    • Aggression toward people or animals during anxious episodes
    • Sudden onset, confusion, pain, or a rapid behavior change

Moderate is a starting point for planning, not a diagnosis. Severe cases receive veterinary care and an in-person assessment before program placement.

    Understanding the behavior

    What is general anxiety?

General anxiety is broader than one trigger. A dog may scan constantly, startle easily, struggle to settle, and carry stress from one event into the next. Pain, medical conditions, early experience, genetics, and repeated frightening events can all contribute.

A veterinary exam is an important part of the plan, especially for sudden onset or anxiety that affects sleep, appetite, or normal function. Medication prescribed by a veterinarian may make learning possible for some dogs. Training supports that care by building predictable routines, coping skills, and tolerable exposure.

The goal is not a fearless personality. It is a dog who can recover, make choices, and participate in daily life with less distress. Many dogs improve, but pace and prognosis vary.

Partners Dogs has trained Arizona dogs through every kind of general anxiety case since 1997, at our Scottsdale and Cave Creek facilities. Lifetime trainer support is included with every board-and-train program.

    What our clients say

“"Finn wasn't afraid of one thing, he was afraid of everything. Every sound, every new person, every change in routine. I kept waiting for him to grow out of it. He was four years old before I finally called Partners. Behavior Camp gave him something I didn't know was possible: the ability to just exist in the world without bracing for impact. He's not a fearless dog now, but he's a functional one. That's everything."”

    Natalie S.

“"Our vet had told us Penny had generalized anxiety and recommended medication, which we tried. It helped some, but the underlying behavior was still there. The Partners team built a behavioral program on top of the medication that actually addressed how she thinks about her environment. Six months later she can handle our busy Scottsdale lifestyle in a way I wouldn't have believed was possible."”

    James and Courtney R.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can general anxiety be improved?

In most cases, yes. With a structured plan and steady follow-through, general anxiety usually improves and becomes much more manageable. How far and how fast depends on the dog and the household, and severe cases start with an in-person assessment.

How long does it take to see change?

Many dogs show early progress in the first weeks of a program, though the timeline varies with the behavior and the dog. The lasting value is in the follow-up: private lessons and group classes help the change hold at home over time.

What if my dog has more than one issue?

That is very common. During the assessment we identify every area of concern and build one plan that works on them together, rather than treating each in isolation.

Is professional training worth the cost?

It is an investment in daily life for you and your dog. Our board-and-train programs include weeks of follow-up, private lessons, and group classes so the results last, and financing is available up to 36 months.

    When can we get started?

Right away. Schedule a call or take the PD360 assessment online and we will find the best time to begin, starting with a clear look at your dog's general anxiety.
