    What you may be seeing

    Common signs

    • Small urine spots on furniture, walls, bags, doors, or new objects
    • Marking after visitors, moves, or the arrival of another animal
    • Returning to previously soiled locations
    • Sniffing, circling, or lifting a leg shortly after entering a room
    • Normal outdoor elimination alongside indoor marking

    Seek help now

    • Straining, blood in urine, frequent attempts, pain, or inability to urinate
    • Sudden loss of housetraining or large-volume accidents
    • Increased thirst, appetite change, weakness, or confusion
    • Aggression between pets connected to marking or territory

Mild is a starting point for planning, not a diagnosis. Urinary difficulty can be an emergency, and sudden onset requires veterinary care before training.

    Understanding the behavior

    What is indoor marking?

Marking usually involves small amounts of urine placed on vertical objects or socially important locations. New pets, visitors, moves, intact status, residual odor, and stress can contribute. Full bladder emptying, frequent urination, straining, or sudden accidents may indicate a medical or housetraining issue instead.

Sudden house-soiling warrants a veterinary check before it is treated as behavior. Urinary infections, pain, endocrine disease, medication changes, and age-related changes can alter elimination. Once medical causes are addressed, supervision, enzymatic cleaning, access control, and a consistent outdoor schedule help prevent rehearsal.

Many dogs improve with a clear plan, but the pace varies with cause and how long the pattern has been practiced. The goal is reliable indoor freedom earned gradually, not punishment after an accident.

Partners Dogs has trained Arizona dogs through every kind of indoor marking case since 1997, at our Scottsdale and Cave Creek facilities. Lifetime trainer support is included with every board-and-train program.

    What our clients say

“"We brought home a second dog and our first dog started marking everything, the couch, the guest room door, my husband's gym bag. I thought we'd made a terrible mistake. Partners helped us understand the trigger, gave us a real protocol for the introduction and the territory management, and the marking stopped after consistent work. Both dogs are fine together now."”

    Alicia T.

“"My rescue started marking right after we moved into our new house. He was housebroken in our old place with zero issues. The Partners team explained that it was adjustment behavior and gave me a clear plan. The enzymatic cleaner protocol plus the training approach they recommended made the difference. He hasn't marked indoors in months."”

    Frequently asked questions

    Can indoor marking be improved?

In most cases, yes. With a structured plan and steady follow-through, indoor marking usually improves and becomes much more manageable. How far and how fast depends on the dog and the household, and severe cases start with an in-person assessment.

How long does it take to see change?

Many dogs show early progress in the first weeks of a program, though the timeline varies with the behavior and the dog. The lasting value is in the follow-up: private lessons and group classes help the change hold at home over time.

What if my dog has more than one issue?

That is very common. During the assessment we identify every area of concern and build one plan that works on them together, rather than treating each in isolation.

Is professional training worth the cost?

It is an investment in daily life for you and your dog. Our board-and-train programs include weeks of follow-up, private lessons, and group classes so the results last, and financing is available up to 36 months.

    When can we get started?

Right away. Schedule a call or take the PD360 assessment online and we will find the best time to begin, starting with a clear look at your dog's indoor marking.
