Play and Move Without Bracing for Teeth

Puppy mouthing can be normal, but painful nipping changes how a family interacts with the dog. Partners Dogs helps build safer play, clearer boundaries, and better control around movement.

    What you may be seeing

    Common signs

    • Grabbing hands, sleeves, pant legs, or ankles during play
    • Nipping when people run, move quickly, or become excited
    • Increasing mouth pressure as arousal rises
    • Difficulty settling after play begins
    • Teething-related chewing and repeated attempts to reengage

    Seek help now

    • Broken skin, punctures, bruising, or bites to the face
    • Stiffening, growling, guarding, or biting during handling
    • Targeting children or a person unable to disengage safely
    • Sudden onset, touch sensitivity, or signs of pain

Mild is a starting point for planning, not a diagnosis. Injury, fear, guarding, or sudden onset warrants veterinary care and an in-person assessment.

    Understanding the behavior

    What is mouthing and nipping?

Mouthing can come from play, teething, overarousal, frustration, herding behavior, or an attempt to stop handling. Context matters. Loose puppy play is different from a stiff dog who bites when touched, guarded, or restrained.

Training gives the dog appropriate outlets and teaches what makes play continue or stop. Adults supervise every interaction with children, use barriers when energy is high, and prevent chasing games that invite ankle nipping.

Many young dogs improve with maturity and consistent teaching, but age alone is not a plan. Painful, escalating, fearful, or stiff behavior needs an assessment rather than a puppy label.

Partners Dogs has trained Arizona dogs through every kind of mouthing and nipping case since 1997, at our Scottsdale and Cave Creek facilities. Lifetime trainer support is included with every board-and-train program.

    What our clients say

“"Our shepherd mix was a land shark at fourteen weeks. We thought he'd grow out of it and instead he just got bigger and sharper. Foundation Camp at Partners was the turning point, they taught him bite inhibition and gave us a protocol for play that we actually followed. By the time he came home, the mouthing was greatly reduced. We could pet him without bracing ourselves."”

    Nina and Rob T.

“"I have a cattle dog mix and she was nipping at my kids' ankles every time they ran in the backyard. I didn't understand the herding instinct piece until the Partners team explained it. That context completely changed how I responded to her. Foundation Camp built the impulse control that made her safer around the kids, and group classes helped her learn appropriate play. She's wonderful now."”

    Frequently asked questions

Can mouthing and nipping be improved?

In most cases, yes. With a structured plan and steady follow-through, mouthing and nipping usually improves and becomes much more manageable. How far and how fast depends on the dog and the household, and severe cases start with an in-person assessment.

How long does it take to see change?

Many dogs show early progress in the first weeks of a program, though the timeline varies with the behavior and the dog. The lasting value is in the follow-up: private lessons and group classes help the change hold at home over time.

What if my dog has more than one issue?

That is very common. During the assessment we identify every area of concern and build one plan that works on them together, rather than treating each in isolation.

Is professional training worth the cost?

It is an investment in daily life for you and your dog. Our board-and-train programs include weeks of follow-up, private lessons, and group classes so the results last, and financing is available up to 36 months.

    When can we get started?

Right away. Schedule a call or take the PD360 assessment online and we will find the best time to begin, starting with a clear look at your dog's mouthing and nipping.
