Moderate is a starting point for planning, not a diagnosis. Severe cases need veterinary care and an in-person assessment before exposure work.
Understanding the behavior
Noise phobia is an intense fear response to sounds such as thunder, fireworks, construction, alarms, or household equipment. Dogs may also react to pressure changes, flashes, or cues that predict the sound. Repeated uncontrolled exposure can make the fear broader and more severe.
Safety comes before desensitization. Secure identification, indoor confinement, closed exits, a quiet refuge, and a plan for predictable events reduce escape and injury. Sound recordings alone may not reproduce the full trigger and should not be used to provoke panic.
A veterinarian should be involved when fear is severe, worsening, sudden, or affecting normal function. Prescribed medication can be an important part of humane care. Many dogs improve with preparation and gradual work, but response and prognosis vary.
Partners Dogs has trained Arizona dogs through every kind of noise phobia case since 1997, at our Scottsdale and Cave Creek facilities. Lifetime trainer support is included with every board-and-train program.

“"Every monsoon season I was sleeping on the floor with my dog while she shook through the night. This had been going on for four years and getting worse every summer. The Partners team built a desensitization protocol through Behavior Camp that actually changed how she responds to thunder. This past monsoon season was the first one in years where I slept in my own bed."”
“"We lost our dog on the Fourth of July two years ago, he panicked and jumped the fence. We found him three miles away the next morning. When we got our next dog, we started working on noise sensitivity early. The Partners program built a dog who can hear fireworks and look to us instead of shutting down. I can't overstate how different that night felt this year."”
Good to know
In most cases, yes. With a structured plan and steady follow-through, noise phobia usually improves and becomes much more manageable. How far and how fast depends on the dog and the household, and severe cases start with an in-person assessment.
Many dogs show early progress in the first weeks of a program, though the timeline varies with the behavior and the dog. The lasting value is in the follow-up: private lessons and group classes help the change hold at home over time.
That is very common. During the assessment we identify every area of concern and build one plan that works on them together, rather than treating each in isolation.
It is an investment in daily life for you and your dog. Our board-and-train programs include weeks of follow-up, private lessons, and group classes so the results last, and financing is available up to 36 months.
Right away. Schedule a call or take the PD360 assessment online and we will find the best time to begin, starting with a clear look at your dog's noise phobia.
