Mild is a starting point for planning, not a diagnosis. Sudden change warrants a veterinary check, and aggression changes the assessment and safety plan.
Understanding the behavior
Not listening is usually a training gap, not a personality flaw. The cue may have been taught only in easy settings, repeated until it lost meaning, reinforced inconsistently, or made too difficult too quickly.
Reliability grows through clear cues, worthwhile reinforcement, gradual distraction, and fair consequences the dog understands. Every family member needs the same words and expectations. Pain, hearing loss, fear, or sudden cognitive change can also reduce responsiveness and should not be mistaken for stubbornness.
The goal is useful communication in ordinary life, not perfect performance in every circumstance. Many dogs become more dependable with consistent practice and realistic proofing.
Partners Dogs has trained Arizona dogs through every kind of not listening case since 1997, at our Scottsdale and Cave Creek facilities. Lifetime trainer support is included with every board-and-train program.

The process
Not sure which program

“"I'd had Max in two group obedience classes before Foundation Camp. He 'knew' everything. He just didn't do it. The Partners team explained that there's a difference between a dog knowing a command and a dog having been trained to a standard of reliability. Foundation Camp built the second thing. It sounds simple but it's completely different. He listens more reliably now, not just when he feels like it."”
“"Our family had a different relationship with every command. My husband said 'sit' once and meant it. I said it three times and gave up. The kids said it and laughed when the dog ignored them. Foundation Camp gave all of us the same framework and held us to it. The dog didn't change because the dog got smarter, the dog changed because we finally all did the same thing consistently. It's embarrassing how obvious that sounds now."”
Good to know
In most cases, yes. With a structured plan and steady follow-through, not listening usually improves and becomes much more manageable. How far and how fast depends on the dog and the household, and severe cases start with an in-person assessment.
Many dogs show early progress in the first weeks of a program, though the timeline varies with the behavior and the dog. The lasting value is in the follow-up: private lessons and group classes help the change hold at home over time.
That is very common. During the assessment we identify every area of concern and build one plan that works on them together, rather than treating each in isolation.
It is an investment in daily life for you and your dog. Our board-and-train programs include weeks of follow-up, private lessons, and group classes so the results last, and financing is available up to 36 months.
