    Dog Behavior Solutions

Keep the Enthusiasm, Add an Off Switch

A social dog can still overwhelm guests, ignore other dogs' signals, and lose all control. Partners Dogs helps channel that energy so your dog can join normal life without taking it over.

    What you may be seeing

    Common signs

    • Jumping, spinning, barking, or mouthing during greetings
    • Pulling hard toward people or dogs
    • Ignoring social cues and repeatedly reentering play
    • Struggling to rest after activity
    • Becoming less responsive as excitement rises

    Seek help now

    • Knocking down or injuring a person or dog
    • Play that escalates into a fight or bite
    • Redirected biting when access is blocked
    • Sudden hyperactivity, confusion, pain, or sleep change

Mild is a starting point for planning, not a diagnosis. Injury, bites, or sudden onset warrant veterinary care and an in-person assessment.

    Understanding the behavior

    What is overexcitement?

Overexcitement is difficulty regulating arousal once something rewarding appears. The dog may jump, vocalize, pull, mouth, body-slam, or continue play after another dog asks for space. More activity alone can create a fitter dog who is still unable to settle.

Training alternates engagement with recovery. Structured greetings, planned breaks, place work, and carefully matched play teach that calm behavior keeps access open. Management protects guests, children, and other dogs while that skill develops.

The goal is not to flatten a joyful personality. It is a dog who can pause, read the room, and rejoin appropriately. Many dogs improve with consistent practice, though maturity, drive, and household follow-through affect pace.

Partners Dogs has trained Arizona dogs through every kind of overexcitement case since 1997, at our Scottsdale and Cave Creek facilities. Lifetime trainer support is included with every board-and-train program.

    What our clients say

“"Nugget was banned from the dog park by unspoken community consensus. He wasn't aggressive, he just couldn't stop. He'd plow into every dog, ignore all the social cues, and turn every play session into a chaotic mess. Foundation Camp built impulse control I didn't think was possible in him. He can now go to the park, greet dogs politely, and play without being 'that dog.' It changed his social life and mine."”

    Stephanie A.

“"Guests at our house were starting to decline invitations because of how overwhelming our dog was. She was harmless but exhausting. Foundation Camp taught her what to do with all that energy when guests arrive. She still loves people, she just greets them like a civilized member of the household now instead of a tornado."”

    Tom and Julie F.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can overexcitement be improved?

In most cases, yes. With a structured plan and steady follow-through, overexcitement usually improves and becomes much more manageable. How far and how fast depends on the dog and the household, and severe cases start with an in-person assessment.

How long does it take to see change?

Many dogs show early progress in the first weeks of a program, though the timeline varies with the behavior and the dog. The lasting value is in the follow-up: private lessons and group classes help the change hold at home over time.

What if my dog has more than one issue?

That is very common. During the assessment we identify every area of concern and build one plan that works on them together, rather than treating each in isolation.

Is professional training worth the cost?

It is an investment in daily life for you and your dog. Our board-and-train programs include weeks of follow-up, private lessons, and group classes so the results last, and financing is available up to 36 months.

    When can we get started?

Right away. Schedule a call or take the PD360 assessment online and we will find the best time to begin, starting with a clear look at your dog's overexcitement.
