    Dog Behavior Solutions

Build Recall Without Gambling on It

A dog who comes in the kitchen may disappear when a rabbit moves through the wash. Partners Dogs helps build a stronger response while keeping leashes, long lines, and secure spaces in the plan.
    Recall Failure

    Behavior severity

    Mild

    What you may be seeing

    Common signs

    • Returning at home but not around dogs, people, or wildlife
    • Waiting for repeated calls before responding
    • Approaching and dodging away
    • Leaving the yard, trail, or play area to follow a distraction
    • Responding only when food is visible

    Seek help now

    • Running into traffic, desert terrain, or an unsecured area
    • Chasing wildlife, livestock, people, or other dogs
    • Hiding, fleeing, or refusing to approach after escape
    • Sudden loss of hearing, responsiveness, or orientation

Mild is a starting point for planning, not a diagnosis. Use a leash or long line now if failure could lead to traffic, wildlife, or unwanted contact.

    Understanding the behavior

    What is recall failure?

Recall fails when the environment pays better than returning, the cue has been repeated without follow-through, or the dog has not practiced at the current level of distraction. Fear, chase drive, and overarousal can also overwhelm a familiar cue.

Training rebuilds value, uses one clear cue, and adds distance and distraction gradually. A long line protects the dog and prevents the cue from predicting the end of every enjoyable activity.

The goal is a strong, maintained response, not a claim that any dog is infallible. Wildlife, traffic, and unfamiliar terrain still require physical safety layers. Results vary with drive, history, setting, and continued practice.

Partners Dogs has trained Arizona dogs through every kind of recall failure case since 1997, at our Scottsdale and Cave Creek facilities. Lifetime trainer support is included with every board-and-train program.

    What our clients say

“"Hiking the McDowell trails with a dog who ignores your recall is a nightmare I know too well. Cleo would take off, and I'd spend twenty minutes trying to get her back. Foundation Camp built a recall that works more reliably in the field. She comes back now with far less stress, and we still use the right safety setup for the trail. The trails here are too good not to enjoy together."”

    Diana K.

“"I thought Otto just 'wasn't a recall dog.' The Partners team told me recall is trained, not inherited. They were right. Foundation Camp built a dog who comes back much more reliably even when the wash is distracting. I couldn't believe the same dog was standing in front of me."”

    Frequently asked questions

    Can recall failure be improved?

In most cases, yes. With a structured plan and steady follow-through, recall failure usually improves and becomes much more manageable. How far and how fast depends on the dog and the household, and severe cases start with an in-person assessment.

How long does it take to see change?

Many dogs show early progress in the first weeks of a program, though the timeline varies with the behavior and the dog. The lasting value is in the follow-up: private lessons and group classes help the change hold at home over time.

What if my dog has more than one issue?

That is very common. During the assessment we identify every area of concern and build one plan that works on them together, rather than treating each in isolation.

Is professional training worth the cost?

It is an investment in daily life for you and your dog. Our board-and-train programs include weeks of follow-up, private lessons, and group classes so the results last, and financing is available up to 36 months.

    When can we get started?

Right away. Schedule a call or take the PD360 assessment online and we will find the best time to begin, starting with a clear look at your dog's recall failure.
