Understanding the behavior
Mounting is common, and in most dogs it has little to do with dominance. It is more often driven by excitement, over arousal, stress, or a bid for attention, and some dogs simply learn it as a habit. Because the driver varies, the fix starts with reading the moments it shows up.
Management is straightforward: interrupt calmly without making a scene, redirect to something else, and avoid situations that wind your dog up past the point of self control. Underneath that, we lower the overall arousal and stress that fuel the behavior and teach a settled alternative your dog can do instead.
Most dogs respond well to consistent redirection and calmer routines. Mounting that appears suddenly, or that comes with signs of discomfort, is worth a veterinary check to rule out a skin, urinary, or other medical cause.
Partners Dogs has trained Arizona dogs through every kind of mounting and humping case since 1997, at our Scottsdale and Cave Creek facilities. Lifetime trainer support is included with every board-and-train program.

Good to know
In most cases, yes. With a structured plan and steady follow-through, mounting and humping usually improves and becomes much more manageable. How far and how fast depends on the dog and the household, and severe cases start with an in-person assessment.
Many dogs show early progress in the first weeks of a program, though the timeline varies with the behavior and the dog. The lasting value is in the follow-up: private lessons and group classes help the change hold at home over time.
That is very common. During the assessment we identify every area of concern and build one plan that works on them together, rather than treating each in isolation.
It is an investment in daily life for you and your dog. Our board-and-train programs include weeks of follow-up, private lessons, and group classes so the results last, and financing is available up to 36 months.
