- Mouthing or nipping during excited play or greetings, not from aggression but from loss of bite inhibition under arousal
- A dog who is perfectly behaved at home but becomes a different animal the moment stimulation increases
- Over-the-top reactions to the leash, the car, or any cue associated with something exciting
- Inability to hold a sit, down, or any known behavior in the presence of another dog or an exciting person
- Play that escalates past other dogs' tolerance — not reading social cues
- Barking or whining continuously in anticipation of greeting
- A dog who has been described as "too much" by other owners at the dog park or on walks
What Is Overexcitement?
Overexcitement looks friendly on the surface — and it is, in a sense. The problem isn't the warmth; it's the complete absence of regulation around it. These dogs have never developed the ability to feel excited and behave appropriately at the same time.
Excitement triggers arousal, arousal floods the dog's system, and at a certain threshold the dog loses access to the conditioned behaviors. This is not the dog choosing to ignore you.
Overexcited dogs are often confused with reactive or aggressive dogs by people who don't know the distinction. But the internal state driving the behavior is completely different.
