Specialty Training / Scent Work

Turn Your Dog's Nose Into Their Favorite Sport

Fifteen minutes of searching can tire a dog out more than an hour-long walk. Scent work is the most efficient enrichment your dog can get, and almost any dog excels at it.

What is dog scent work, and why is it so good for dogs?

Scent work is a sport that teaches your dog to find a specific hidden odor, channeling their natural nose-driven instincts into focused, rewarding searching. Because mental work drains a dog faster than physical exercise, our beginner and advanced classes are some of the best tools we have for calming busy minds, building confidence in shy dogs, and giving older or less athletic dogs a sport they can genuinely win. There is no jumping or running required, just a nose and a little practice, which makes it a perfect fit for nearly every dog in the Valley.

SPECIALTY TRAINING

A Focused, Confident Dog With a Job to Do

Scent work channels the instinct your dog was born with into a sport they cannot stop winning. Every search ends in a find. Every find pays off. In a class, in competition, or in your kitchen before breakfast, a dog with a nose job is a dog who settles.

Our beginner through advanced classes take dogs from their first box search all the way to AKC Scent Work and NACSW trial prep. No running. No jumping. Just a nose, a hide, and a handler learning to trust what their dog already knows.

WHY SCENT WORK WORKS

What You and Your Dog Get Out of It

  • Mental drain that lasts all afternoon. Fifteen minutes of searching burns mental energy faster than an hour-long walk. The dog who came in wired leaves calm and satisfied.
  • Confidence for shy and anxious dogs. Searching is autonomous. The dog leads, the handler follows. Every find is a win the dog earned, and anxious dogs blossom because the sport never asks them to perform for a crowd.
  • A sport any dog can win. Three-legged dogs, seniors, reactive dogs who cannot do group play, and couch-loving breeds all compete and title in scent work. There is no wrong body type for a nose.
  • Beginner to AKC and NACSW titles. We take dogs from their very first box search through full trial prep. Families who start for enrichment often find they cannot stop once the dog gets serious about the sport.

WHAT A CLASS LOOKS LIKE

Sample Scent Work Exercises by Level

You will not see drills and obedience. You will see your dog working a search problem and feeling smart about it. Every level builds on the same core skill: find the odor, tell us where it is, get paid.

  • Intro: Primary Box Search (indoor). Six identical boxes, one with food. Your dog learns that searching pays. By the end of class one, most dogs are independently picking the right box.
  • Foundations: Odor Pairing. We pair birch oil with the food they already love. Within two sessions, dogs are alerting on birch alone. This is the moment most owners realize their dog is doing real detection work.
  • Beginner: Interior Searches. Birch hidden in a small room under a chair, in a closet, behind a curtain. Your dog runs the room and offers a clear final response. You learn to read it.
  • Intermediate: Exterior and Vehicle Searches. Outdoor environments, desert wash, parking lot, our facility yard, plus vehicle exteriors. Real-world distractions, real-world wind cones. This is where most pet dogs prove they are tournament-grade.
  • Advanced: Multi-Odor and Blind Hides. Anise and clove added to the rotation. Hides set by an outside steward so the handler does not know where they are either. Trial prep starts here.
  • At-Home Daily Drill. A 5-minute box search before breakfast. That is the assignment. We promise this becomes the calmest 5 minutes of your day.

Pricing and What to Bring

Pricing. Beginner cohorts run in 6-week blocks. Current pricing is posted with each booking. Call 480-595-6700 if you want a number today. We do not gate-keep the price. There is just one rate per level.

What to bring. A 6-foot flat leash (no retractable), a flat collar or harness, high-value treats that are small, soft, and fast to eat, and a calm dog crate or x-pen if your dog crates well. Scent kits are provided.

Who should call first. Dogs whose reactivity makes a shared room unsafe should start with Leash Reactivity Intensive before joining a class. Most reactive dogs end up in scent work eventually. We just want the timing right.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Scent Work FAQ

Does my dog need any prior obedience for scent work?

Less than most classes. Your dog needs to be comfortable in a class setting and not reactive toward other dogs at a distance. Strong obedience is not required, searching is largely autonomous. If reactivity is the issue, see our Leash Reactivity Intensive first.

Is scent work good for high-energy dogs?

Yes, and often better than another walk. The cognitive load of locating odor burns mental energy faster than physical exercise. Many sport dog handlers add scent work specifically because it produces a calmer dog at home.

Can senior dogs or dogs with mobility issues participate?

Absolutely. Scent work is one of the most accessible dog sports. Searches can be set at any height, distance, and surface. Three-legged dogs, dogs with hip issues, and dogs over 13 are common in our classes.

How much does the class cost and how long are the cohorts?

Beginner cohorts run in 6-week blocks. Pricing is published with each booking. Call 480-595-6700 or check the booking page for the current rate. Most families finish the beginner block and roll straight into Foundations because the dog finally has a job they love.

Can we compete in AKC or NACSW trials?

Yes. Our advanced classes follow both AKC Scent Work and NACSW rules so you can move directly from class into trials. We also host trial prep sessions before major events.

Honest Guidance on Where to Start

  • If you want enrichment, confidence, or a low-impact activity, scent work is a great fit. High-drive dogs, shy dogs, seniors, and dogs who cannot do rough group play all do well here, because the work is calm and autonomous and there is no wrong body type for a good nose.
  • If leash reactivity makes a shared room unsafe, start there first. We get your dog comfortable enough to work near others, then bring you into scent work. Most reactive dogs get here, the timing just has to be right. Leash Reactivity Intensive
