    Cook Without Guarding Every Counter

A stolen sandwich is frustrating. A dog grabbing bones, medication, or hot food can become an emergency. Partners Dogs helps you create a kitchen routine that works even when your attention is elsewhere.

    What you may be seeing

    Common signs

    • Paws or nose on counters, tables, sinks, or stovetops
    • Checking surfaces when people leave the room
    • Stealing food, wrappers, utensils, or dishes
    • Hovering during cooking and ignoring a bed or mat
    • Moving chairs or using nearby objects to reach food

    Seek help now

    • Ingestion of chocolate, xylitol, medication, cooked bones, or another toxic item
    • Swallowing packaging, cloth, utensils, or objects that may obstruct the gut
    • Burns, cuts, or a fall while reaching a surface
    • Growling or biting when an item is removed

Mild is a starting point for planning, not a diagnosis. Suspected poisoning, obstruction, or injury requires immediate veterinary guidance.

    Understanding the behavior

    What is counter surfing?

Counter surfing is a high-payoff habit. One successful grab can reward many failed attempts, so the behavior survives even when the counter is usually empty. Dogs also learn exactly when people are distracted or leave the room.

Training works best when management removes surprise rewards. Food, medication, knives, and packaging stay out of reach while the dog learns a reliable leave it, a calm station outside the work area, and boundaries that make sense in daily life.

The goal is not constant correction. It is a safer kitchen where your dog has a clear job and you can turn your back without panic. Many dogs improve when access and reinforcement change together, though reliability still depends on practice and household consistency.

Partners Dogs has trained Arizona dogs through every kind of counter surfing case since 1997, at our Scottsdale and Cave Creek facilities. Lifetime trainer support is included with every board-and-train program.

    What our clients say

“"We have a Great Dane. Counter height was not a meaningful barrier. I had accepted this as my life until a friend told me about Partners. Foundation Camp was a revelation, they built a kitchen behavior that actually holds. He has a 'place' spot in the corner of our kitchen now and he goes there every time I start cooking. I cooked Thanksgiving dinner this year without incident for the first time in three years."”

    Meredith L.

“"My lab stole an entire rotisserie chicken off the counter while I was answering the door. I was annoyed about the chicken but honestly more scared about what else she might take when I wasn't watching. Foundation Camp gave her a solid 'leave it' and a much better relationship with self-control in general. The counter surfing stopped."”

Excellent experience for our adopted puppy and for me! The staff are amazing, caring, and knowledgeable. Our puppy has learned so many valuable skills, including socialization and walking on a leash, and has become much more confident around other dogs. I’ve also learned a lot about training and how to better support our puppy at home.

We had to go out of town and had absolutely no one to watch our furry friend. I trust the opinions of a few staff members and decided it was time for our girls first boarding session. I knew my dog was going to get absolutely loved on and taken good care of, even without add ons like training sessions or daycare. That she was! I have never seen this girl happier to just exist somewhere other than home or her favorite park. Staff communication was on point, especially at pick up when a kennel worker was explaining she ruined her dog bed, asking if I still wanted to take it home. So sweet. Some other staff could use some training on how to be personable, but over all 10/10 would recommend.

Sky is always excited to spend days at her favorite dog hotel… she is also happy when we pick her up, all fed and washed. Great place.

We had an great experience with our dog training. The training was professional, patient, knowledgeable, and truly worked with us to get what our dog needed. We especially appreciated the guidance and support in earning our AKC Community Canine (CGCA) and AKC Urban Canine (CGCU) certificates. Every step was clearly explained, and the classes gave plenty of group time with practical tools that helped build our dog’s confidence, manners, and skills in real-world situations. If you are looking for relaxed and patient trainers who genuinely cares about both the dog and the people at the other end of the leash, we recommend them.

The facility and staff are always very friendly and attentive. I love the concept of the dogs being able to play while they are also reinforcing their training! My dog always loves going to daycare and best of all I know he is being taken care of and is having fun with his friends. Thank you, Partners!!!!!

    Frequently asked questions

What makes counter surfing dangerous instead of just annoying?

A stolen sandwich is frustrating, but a dog grabbing bones, medication, chocolate, xylitol, or hot food off the stove can turn into an emergency fast. Swallowed packaging, cloth, or utensils can also cause an obstruction. If your dog has ingested a toxic item or you suspect an obstruction, that is an immediate veterinary call, not a training question.

What program helps with counter surfing and what does it cost?

Counter surfing typically responds to Foundation Camp, our 14-day board-and-train that builds obedience and manners ($3,509, discounted with membership), or weekly Group Classes for ongoing practice in a structured setting. A $199 PD360 Assessment, credited toward enrollment in your recommended camp or membership (not toward à la carte bookings or general reservations), confirms which path fits your dog.

How long does it take to stop counter surfing?

Counter surfing is a mild-severity habit, so most families see real change within the 14-day Foundation Camp or a few consistent weeks of Group Classes practice. Because one successful grab can reward many failed attempts, the timeline depends heavily on keeping counters genuinely clear while your dog learns the new leave-it and station habits.

How do I stop my dog from jumping on the counter?

Counter surfing fixes faster than most owners expect, but only when prevention is total. The protocol:

    • Total clearance during the training phase. No food, dishes, butter, or anything edible left on counters for at least 30 days while you build the new pattern. One stolen item resets the work.
    • Teach “off” with a hand target. When all four paws are on the floor, mark and reward. When paws come up, no attention, no “no”, just unrewarded.
    • Install a kitchen place command. A mat outside the work zone where your dog goes when you are cooking or eating. Reward heavily when they hold it.
    • Manage when you cannot supervise. Baby gate the kitchen, or crate the dog when food is out and you are not actively training.

This is a behavior where consistency from everyone in the household decides the outcome.

Why does my dog steal food off the counter?

Counter surfing is one of the most self-rewarding behaviors a dog can find. Your dog jumps up, the dog gets food. The behavior is reinforced immediately and intensely every single time it works. Even occasional success, one stolen sandwich a month, is enough to maintain the habit indefinitely.

This is also why “just tell them no” never works. Your correction is one piece of mild negative consequence. The stolen steak is a life-changing positive consequence. The dog has done the math.

The fix is two-part: prevent rehearsal (do not leave food on counters during the training phase, ever) and teach an incompatible behavior (an “off” or place command paired with default four-on-the-floor in the kitchen). Counter surfing is a Foundation Camp case at Partners Dogs.
