"Come" Shouldn't Be Optional

What you may be seeing
- Dog looks back when called but continues what they're doing rather than returning
- Dog comes partway back and then veers off or stops just out of reach
- Reliable recall in the house or yard but complete failure in outdoor, off-leash environments
- Recall that degrades in the presence of other dogs, wildlife, or interesting smells
- Dog who has learned to avoid being caught — staying near but not within grabbing range
- Recall that requires multiple repetitions before the dog responds
- Inconsistent recall — comes back beautifully sometimes, ignores you completely other times
- A dog who has bolted and been difficult to recover on trails or in open areas
- Dog who only comes back when food is visibly present in the handler's hand
- Recall that has deteriorated over time rather than improving
What Is Recall Failure?
Recall failure is one of the most common and consequential training gaps we see — and it's almost always a training problem, not a stubborn dog problem. The recall was never built with enough value, enough consistency, or enough real-world generalization to compete with what the dog finds more interesting.
Most owners teach "come" in the living room. Then the owner calls the dog at the dog park and is baffled when the dog ignores them. But from the dog's perspective, the word "come" has only ever been practiced in low-stakes contexts.
Recall is also one of the behaviors most commonly poisoned by its own consequences — the dog learns that coming when called ends the fun.
