What Is Sibling Aggression?
Sibling aggression — sometimes called inter-dog household aggression — is aggression between dogs who live in the same home. It is one of the most emotionally devastating behavior problems we work with.
Dogs who fight within the same household are almost never doing it because they haven't figured out "who's in charge." Dominance theory as applied to household dog conflict has been largely discredited. What's actually happening is usually more nuanced: resource competition, incompatible social styles, or a relationship that deteriorated as both dogs matured.
Common patterns include: littermate syndrome, a resident dog displaced by a new addition, two dogs who coexisted until one hit social maturity, or an underlying resource guarding issue that escalates when both dogs are present.
The crucial clinical point: sibling aggression that involves injury or has escalated over time should be treated with the same seriousness as aggression toward people.
