Open the Door Without Holding Your Breath

Door bolting turns every delivery, guest, and school-day exit into a safety drill. Partners Dogs helps build a default wait so the people in your home can move normally and your dog stays protected.

    What you may be seeing

    Common signs

    • Crowding, scratching, or rushing as a door opens
    • Ignoring cues when a visitor or outdoor trigger is present
    • Slipping through gates, garage doors, or vehicle doors
    • Pacing and vocalizing around arrivals
    • Requiring physical restraint at routine thresholds

    Seek help now

    • Any escape into traffic, desert terrain, or an unsecured area
    • Chasing people, dogs, livestock, or wildlife after bolting
    • Biting or redirecting when someone blocks the exit
    • A sudden new escape pattern or disorientation

Mild is a starting point for planning, not a diagnosis. Use two layers of containment now if an escape could lead to traffic, wildlife, or contact with others.

    Understanding the behavior

    What is door bolting?

Door bolting is the habit of rushing through an opening without permission. Excitement, access to the outdoors, greeting visitors, or chasing movement can reward the behavior immediately.

Training pairs a clear threshold routine with physical management. Gates, leashes, closed interior doors, and family rules prevent escapes while the dog learns to pause, respond, and wait for release. Every household member must know the plan.

The goal is a safer default, not a claim that a door can be left open without supervision. Many dogs build reliable threshold manners with repetition, but wildlife, visitors, or sudden movement can still raise the difficulty.

Partners Dogs has trained Arizona dogs through every kind of door bolting case since 1997, at our Scottsdale and Cave Creek facilities. Lifetime trainer support is included with every board-and-train program.

    What our clients say

“"Hank had gotten out three times in one month. The third time he made it to a busy intersection and I was shaking for an hour afterward. Foundation Camp taught him a door stay that is reliable now. My kids can open the front door without me standing there managing him. The peace of mind alone was worth every dollar."”

    Karen W.

“"I lived in Cave Creek and every time my dog bolted I was terrified about rattlesnakes and coyotes. She thought it was hilarious, I absolutely did not. The Partners trainers built a wait behavior at the threshold that she holds even when other dogs walk by outside. It changed the stress level of our entire morning routine."”

Excellent experience for our adopted puppy and for me! The staff are amazing, caring, and knowledgeable. Our puppy has learned so many valuable skills, including socialization and walking on a leash, and has become much more confident around other dogs. I’ve also learned a lot about training and how to better support our puppy at home.

We had to go out of town and had absolutely no one to watch our furry friend. I trust the opinions of a few staff members and decided it was time for our girls first boarding session. I knew my dog was going to get absolutely loved on and taken good care of, even without add ons like training sessions or daycare. That she was! I have never seen this girl happier to just exist somewhere other than home or her favorite park. Staff communication was on point, especially at pick up when a kennel worker was explaining she ruined her dog bed, asking if I still wanted to take it home. So sweet. Some other staff could use some training on how to be personable, but over all 10/10 would recommend.

Sky is always excited to spend days at her favorite dog hotel… she is also happy when we pick her up, all fed and washed. Great place.

We had an great experience with our dog training. The training was professional, patient, knowledgeable, and truly worked with us to get what our dog needed. We especially appreciated the guidance and support in earning our AKC Community Canine (CGCA) and AKC Urban Canine (CGCU) certificates. Every step was clearly explained, and the classes gave plenty of group time with practical tools that helped build our dog’s confidence, manners, and skills in real-world situations. If you are looking for relaxed and patient trainers who genuinely cares about both the dog and the people at the other end of the leash, we recommend them.

The facility and staff are always very friendly and attentive. I love the concept of the dogs being able to play while they are also reinforcing their training! My dog always loves going to daycare and best of all I know he is being taken care of and is having fun with his friends. Thank you, Partners!!!!!

    Good to know

    Frequently asked questions

Why do you recommend two layers of containment for door bolting?

A single line of defense, like a leash held loosely or one closed door, fails the moment someone is distracted or a delivery arrives. Two layers, such as a leash plus a closed interior door, or a baby gate plus a trained wait, mean one lapse does not turn into an escape onto a road or into desert terrain.

What program helps with door bolting and what does it cost?

Door bolting typically responds to Foundation Camp, our 14-day board-and-train that builds obedience and threshold manners ($3,509, discounted with membership), or weekly Group Classes for ongoing reinforcement. A $199 PD360 Assessment, credited toward enrollment in your recommended camp or membership (not toward à la carte bookings or general reservations), confirms the right starting point for your dog.

How long does it take to stop door bolting?

Door bolting is a mild-severity habit, so most dogs build reliable threshold manners within the 14-day Foundation Camp or a few consistent weeks of Group Classes practice. Wildlife, visitors, or sudden movement can still raise the difficulty afterward, so the goal is a safer default rather than a door that never needs supervision.

How do I stop my dog from bolting out the door?

Training pairs a clear threshold routine, teaching your dog to pause, look to you, and wait for release, with physical management like gates, leashes, and closed interior doors while the habit is still forming. Every household member needs to know and use the same routine, since one rushed exit can undo weeks of consistent practice.

Why does my dog bolt out the door every time it opens?

Door bolting is one of the most dangerous habits a dog can have. It gets dogs hit by cars, lost in Scottsdale neighborhoods, and into encounters with coyotes and rattlesnakes in the desert. The reason it happens:

    • The door represents freedom. Every successful bolt is hugely rewarded, running, exploring, sniffing, chasing.
    • The threshold is high-arousal. Doorbells, arrivals, departures: the moments when the door opens are when your dog is most excited.
    • No one ever taught the alternative. Most dogs were never given a default door behavior. The threshold is undefined, so the dog made one up.

The fix is teaching a clear threshold rule. Your dog does not cross unless released. This is taught at every doorway, every car door, every gate. At Partners Dogs door-bolting is a Foundation Camp case and we usually see it paired with recall issues that need their own work.
