Behavior Severity Level
Severity: Moderate
What you may be seeing
- Stiffening, growling, or snapping when anyone approaches the food bowl during a meal
- Hard direct stare, "whale eye," or a head lowered over the bowl when someone gets close
- Eating faster as a person or another pet approaches — trying to consume food before it can be taken
- Snapping or biting when a hand reaches toward the bowl or nearby floor space
- Aggression that escalates when corrected — growling louder or snapping when told "no"
- Food aggression toward other pets in the household at shared feeding times
- Defense that extends to high-value treats, chews, or food scraps on the floor
- Behavior that starts and ends with food — dog is otherwise relaxed and friendly
- Children or family members who have been growled at or bitten near the food area
- Mealtime routines that have been reorganized to keep everyone safe from the dog

What Our Clients Say
“I'd been putting Ranger's bowl down and leaving the room for two years because he'd growl if I stood nearby. Partners sorted it out in a way I never could have on my own. We can stand right next to him now while he eats. It feels like a completely different household.”
“Our trainer at Partners was the first person who explained the difference between resource guarding and what Maya was actually doing around food. Behavior Camp addressed it directly and the results were real. Mealtimes used to be the most stressful part of our day — now they're just mealtimes.”
