- Stiffening, freezing, or low growling when approached near food or a valued item
- Hard eye contact, "whale eye" (showing whites of eyes), or head lowering over a resource

What Is Resource Guarding?
Resource guarding is exactly what it sounds like: a dog who defends something they value. That something can be food, treats, a chew, a toy, a bed or couch spot, a doorway, another pet — or even a person. The defense can range from a low warning growl to a full snap or bite.
Here's what's important to understand: resource guarding is a completely normal, hardwired canine behavior. In the wild, controlling access to food is a survival strategy. Your dog isn't being dominant or trying to challenge your authority — they're doing something that makes deep instinctive sense to them.
The most dangerous thing owners do with resource guarding is try to "alpha roll" their dog or respond to guarding with confrontation. This almost always makes the behavior worse.
Resource guarding around food is the most common presentation, but object guarding, space guarding, and "person guarding" are all variations we work with regularly.
