What Is Territorial Aggression?
Territorial aggression is a dog who has taken on the role of property defender — and is executing that role with genuine intensity. Unlike stranger reactivity, which is driven primarily by fear, territorial aggression is motivated by a perceived threat to the dog's space. The dog isn't afraid. They are on patrol.
The most common presentations we see in Scottsdale and Cave Creek are fence fighting, front-door aggression, and delivery driver incidents. Front-door aggression is among the most dangerous because the distances are short and the consequences of a breach are serious.
Delivery driver incidents have become increasingly common in the Scottsdale area. A dog who is triggered by the sight of a truck, a uniform, or a wheeled dolly will generalize that trigger quickly.
It's worth naming what territorial aggression is not: it is not evidence of a good guard dog. Territorial dogs do not discriminate effectively. That is a liability, not an asset.
