    What you may be seeing

    Common signs

    • Persistent scanning, pacing, panting, trembling, or shadowing
    • Startling at ordinary sounds or movement
    • Difficulty resting even in familiar places
    • Avoiding new people, locations, surfaces, or routine changes
    • Stress that carries over long after a trigger has passed

    Seek help now

    • Self-injury, escape attempts, or panic that cannot be interrupted safely
    • Refusing food or water, severe sleep disruption, or inability to eliminate normally
    • Aggression toward people or animals during anxious episodes
    • Sudden onset, confusion, pain, or a rapid behavior change

Moderate is a starting point for planning, not a diagnosis. Severe cases receive veterinary care and an in-person assessment before program placement.

    Understanding the behavior

    What is general anxiety?

General anxiety is broader than one trigger. A dog may scan constantly, startle easily, struggle to settle, and carry stress from one event into the next. Pain, medical conditions, early experience, genetics, and repeated frightening events can all contribute.

A veterinary exam is an important part of the plan, especially for sudden onset or anxiety that affects sleep, appetite, or normal function. Medication prescribed by a veterinarian may make learning possible for some dogs. Training supports that care by building predictable routines, coping skills, and tolerable exposure.

The goal is not a fearless personality. It is a dog who can recover, make choices, and participate in daily life with less distress. Many dogs improve, but pace and prognosis vary.

Partners Dogs has trained Arizona dogs through every kind of general anxiety case since 1997, at our Scottsdale and Cave Creek facilities. Lifetime trainer support is included with every board-and-train program.

    What our clients say

“"Finn wasn't afraid of one thing, he was afraid of everything. Every sound, every new person, every change in routine. I kept waiting for him to grow out of it. He was four years old before I finally called Partners. Behavior Camp gave him something I didn't know was possible: the ability to just exist in the world without bracing for impact. He's not a fearless dog now, but he's a functional one. That's everything."”

    Natalie S.

“"Our vet had told us Penny had generalized anxiety and recommended medication, which we tried. It helped some, but the underlying behavior was still there. The Partners team built a behavioral program on top of the medication that actually addressed how she thinks about her environment. Six months later she can handle our busy Scottsdale lifestyle in a way I wouldn't have believed was possible."”

First time boarding our two German Shepherds at Partners for a 7 day stay, and we couldn't be happier. Both dogs have medical conditions and take multiple medications, so finding a place that truly pays attention to detail was important. Megan and her team were fantastic, good communication, and thoughtful care. We'll definitely be using them again. Here's a picture of our two tired pups after coming home 🙂

I absolutely love this place, from the loving attention they get to the discipline they get when they behave badly! They pay close attention to our dog's special needs, and they come home exhausted. Every single employee seems to love the dogs, too 😁

Very nice welcome. My dog's name was on the welcome sign out front with other dogs names coming in today. Nicole was very personable and informative as to what the assessment would entail. Upon pick up I saw a video of my dog in playtime and what she would benefit in training. Felt confident to sign up for training camp.

Highly recommend their foundations board and train camp!! Not only did our puppy come back home with new obedience skills, but he has LOVED coming back for doggie daycare days (INCLUDED in the foundations package!). The team here is top of the line and so caring! It's such a great feeling knowing we invested in our pup and trusted experts to make him feel confident and cared for!

Daisy loves going to daycare, rather than stay at home alone, when I'm gone all day. She gets to play with all the other pups & her favorite humans! She even gets some training during her stay.

I recently brought my young dog in for snake avoidance training, I am not going to lie.. I was a little skeptical because we were in and out of there in a couple of minutes. Well tonight while out for our last potty break before bed we walked past a bush and heard a rattle…. My dog jumped back and ran the other way. Very pleased with the results and will definitely be back for a refresher course!

Going to Partners Dog training was the best decision I’ve made since adopting my pup. She was night and day after her training camp and she loves to go to doggy daycare. The staff/trainers are very helpful and professional. You can tell they’ve been doing this for a while.

Great staff and attitude. The dogs love their day there.

Hi German Shepherd, Strider has been going to Partners Dog Training since he was a puppy. I have been so happy with the training he has received there! Everyone there has been so wonderful and caring! I have learned so much in how to be a good dog parent! We have done the agility course, Private lessons, Boot Camp, group lessons, daycare, and boarding at this facility..I highly recommend Partners if you want your dog to sharpen his skills and be a great obedient companion!

Partners daycare always treats my boxer well and she comes back better trained and ready for a nap! It is really helpful during the 100+ heat providing a safe and fun place for her. Thanks for putting her booties on for pick up too!

Partners is run like a finely tuned engine. The staff is knowledgeable, thorough, interested and supportive. Albeit on the spendy side, but worth every dollar invested. Their facility is impressive. The individual care of each dog is loving and caring, yet authoritative. Partners is an investment in not only your dog, but you too! I have two things I am a little disappointed with (and this has NOTHING to do with Partners training or the dog). Because Partners is pricey (like I said, an investment) I tthink a discount for a second family dog to go thru trsining camp should be offered. The other minor plaint is while Sundays are closed, allow pick-ups ONLY for boarders. And pick-ups only. You're forced to pay another night even if you're able to get b your furbaby. Otherwise... Bravo Partners! Shout out to the entire team- Kay, Lexi and Atina.

    Good to know

    Frequently asked questions

Do I need to see a vet before starting training for general anxiety?

Yes, especially for sudden onset or anxiety that affects sleep, appetite, or normal function, since pain, medical conditions, and genetics can all contribute to a persistently anxious dog. A veterinary exam is part of the plan, not a delay to it, and medication prescribed by your vet may make learning possible for dogs who cannot settle enough to train.

What program is recommended for general anxiety and how much does it cost?

General anxiety is typically moderate severity, so we start with Behavior Camp, our 21-day immersive board-and-train ($6,244, discounted with membership), with Private Lessons as the alternative for dogs already on a veterinary medication plan. The $199 PD360 Assessment, credited toward enrollment, helps set realistic goals before you begin.

How long does it take to help a dog with general anxiety?

General anxiety touches many parts of daily life, so progress is measured in a dog's growing ability to recover and settle rather than a single fixed date. Most dogs improve steadily over Behavior Camp's 21 days, especially once any medical contributor is addressed, though pace and prognosis vary with the dog's history and genetics.

Why does my dog seem anxious all the time?

Generalized anxiety is different from a specific phobia. A dog with noise phobia is afraid of thunder. A dog with separation anxiety panics when alone. A dog with general anxiety is anxious about most things, most of the time, and the trigger is essentially the world itself.

    Common drivers:

    • Genetics. Some dogs come wired with a more reactive nervous system. Working lines bred for sensitivity, certain breeds, and dogs from poorly-bred backgrounds are all over-represented.
    • Early life experience. Puppies raised in barren environments without exposure to normal household stimuli often develop generalized anxiety as adults.
    • Trauma. Rescues with unknown histories sometimes carry anxiety responses from past abuse, abandonment, or chronic neglect.
    • Medical contributors. Pain, gut issues, thyroid abnormalities, and other medical conditions can present as anxiety. Always rule these out.

At Partners Dogs general anxiety is a Behavior Camp case. The work is rebuilding the dog's emotional regulation, confidence, and tolerance for normal stimuli, not just managing one trigger at a time.

Should my anxious dog be on medication?

Sometimes, yes. We are not anti-medication at Partners Dogs, and neither is the modern behavior community. For some dogs with genuine anxiety, the right medication, prescribed by a veterinarian or veterinary behaviorist, is the difference between a dog who can engage with training and a dog whose nervous system is too dysregulated to learn.

    How we think about it:

    • Medication is a tool, not a fix. It does not replace behavior modification. It makes the behavior work possible.
    • Severity is the question. Mild anxiety often responds to training alone. Moderate-to-severe anxiety often benefits from medication during the training phase.
    • Refer to a veterinary behaviorist for medication. Trainers do not prescribe. Your regular vet or a board-certified veterinary behaviorist makes the call.
    • Plan for an exit. Many dogs taper off medication once training has rebuilt their emotional regulation. Some need long-term support. Both are okay.

If we suspect medication might help your dog, we will tell you and refer you to the right professionals.
