Understanding the behavior
What is people aggression?
People aggression includes threatening, snapping, pursuing, or biting a person. Fear, pain, guarding, territorial behavior, handling sensitivity, conflict, and learned history can contribute. The details of each incident matter, including warning signals, target, context, injury, and whether the dog pursued.
Secure separation comes first. Use locked barriers, leashes, crates when appropriate, and written visitor rules. Children and vulnerable adults should have no access to the dog until a qualified professional has assessed the risk. Do not recreate an incident to test the dog.
Any bite or sudden onset warrants veterinary evaluation. Severe cases receive an in-person assessment before program placement. Some dogs become safer and more manageable with intensive work, while others require permanent restrictions. No responsible trainer can guarantee that bite risk will be eliminated.

Frequently asked questions
Is my dog's aggression toward people about fear or dominance?
Almost always fear. Dominance theory, the idea that a dog is trying to assert rank over people, has been largely set aside by modern behavior science, and it rarely explains what is actually happening.
- Fear-based aggression (the vast majority of cases) shows retreat before advance, lip licking, whale eye, a lowered body, and bites that happen after the dog has tried to create distance and failed.
- Confident, offense-driven aggression is much rarer and looks different from the start: forward stiff body language, direct approach, no retreat attempt.
- Why it matters: treating a fearful dog like a dominant one, with more pressure and correction, almost always makes the fear and the aggression worse.
The PD360 Assessment is built specifically to make this distinction, because the treatment plans for each are very different.
Is aggression toward people always fixable, or should I consider rehoming?
Most people-aggression cases improve significantly with the right assessment and a real behavior modification plan. Not every case, though, and we will tell you honestly when that's true.
- Indicators the dog is workable: a single bite or a pattern of warnings without bites, identifiable and manageable triggers, and a household that can commit to a multi-month plan plus lifelong management.
- Indicators rehoming or a harder conversation is warranted: repeated unprovoked bites, bites with no warning signs, a bite severity that has drawn significant injury, or a household (especially with young children) that cannot realistically maintain the management the dog needs.
The PD360 Assessment gives us an honest, specific read on which category your dog falls into. We do not sugarcoat it either direction, and we have helped many families keep dogs that looked unworkable on paper.
What program is recommended for aggression toward people, and how much does it cost?
Aggression toward people is a severe-severity behavior, so it always starts with an in-person PD360 Assessment ($199, credited toward enrollment) rather than a phone consultation. We typically recommend Transform Camp, our most intensive 28-day immersive board-and-train ($8,929, discounted with membership), followed by private lessons to transfer the work into your real environment.
My dog growled at my child. What do I do?
This is one of the most serious calls we get. Here is exactly what to do, in order:
- Separate them immediately. Until you understand what happened, your child and dog need to be physically apart. Use baby gates, crates, closed doors.
- Do not punish the growl. Your dog warned. That is good information. Punishing the warning teaches them to skip it next time.
- Rule out medical. A vet visit to check for pain, vision changes, hearing changes, neurological issues.
- Get a professional assessment within days, not weeks. The first growl is the moment to take this seriously. Waiting for a bite is the wrong call.
- Be honest with the trainer. The full context of what your child was doing matters enormously to the assessment.
At Partners Dogs we treat dog-to-child cases with the highest level of care. Some are fully workable with Transform Camp plus a structured management plan. Others require harder conversations about household safety. We will tell you the truth either way.
Why has my dog started growling or snapping at people?
A dog who has started growling or snapping at people is almost always communicating one of these:
- Fear. The most common driver. Your dog perceives a person as threatening, too direct, too tall, too fast, too unfamiliar, and is asking for space the only way they know how.
- Pain. A dog in pain becomes more defensive about being approached, touched, or moved. Always rule out medical first.
- Resource guarding spillover. Some dogs growl at people specifically when the person approaches food, a toy, or a favored person.
- Past negative experience. Rescues, dogs with unclear histories, dogs who were physically corrected by a previous owner.
Critical context: growling is communication. A dog who growls is warning you. Punishing the growl teaches the dog to skip the warning and go straight to the bite. Never correct a growl.
