What is not listening?
Not listening is usually a training gap, not a personality flaw. The cue may have been taught only in easy settings, repeated until it lost meaning, reinforced inconsistently, or made too difficult too quickly.
Reliability grows through clear cues, worthwhile reinforcement, gradual distraction, and fair consequences the dog understands. Every family member needs the same words and expectations. Pain, hearing loss, fear, or sudden cognitive change can also reduce responsiveness and should not be mistaken for stubbornness.
The goal is useful communication in ordinary life, not perfect performance in every circumstance. Many dogs become more dependable with consistent practice and realistic proofing.

Frequently asked questions
Is my dog's breed just harder to train, or is something else going on?
Breed genetics are real, but “hard to train” is usually a mismatch between the method and the dog, not a dead end.
- Some breeds were bred for independent decision-making. Hounds who work a scent trail out of sight of the handler, terriers who were meant to think for themselves underground, guardian breeds who assess situations rather than take orders. That independence isn't defiance, it is exactly what they were selected for.
- The fix is matching the method, not lowering expectations. High-value rewards, shorter and more frequent sessions, and framing commands as a fair trade rather than a demand work better for independent breeds than a one-size-fits-all approach.
- We see “stubborn” dogs succeed constantly. The label usually says more about the training approach than the dog's actual capability.

My puppy used to listen, why is he suddenly ignoring me at 8 months?
Welcome to adolescence. Dogs between roughly 6-18 months go through a developmental phase where previously rock-solid commands seem to vanish. This is biological, not behavioral. The dog's brain is rewiring, hormones are surging, and the world is suddenly much more interesting than you are.
This is the make-or-break window. Owners who:
- Stop training during adolescence often end up with the “dog who used to listen” problem permanently.
- Keep practicing consistently with appropriate reinforcement push their dog through to mature reliability.
Adolescence is also when most dogs end up at Partners Dogs. A puppy class graduate at 12 months who is suddenly impossible on walks is exactly who Foundation Camp was built for. Do not assume the early training was wasted. It was not. It just needs to be carried through the rewiring phase.
My dog only listens when I have treats. How do I fix that?
Treat dependency is extremely common, and it is a training gap, not a character flaw in your dog. It happens when the reward schedule never graduated past “every single time.”
- Switch to random reinforcement. Reward roughly every third or fourth correct response instead of every one. Dogs actually work harder for unpredictable rewards than guaranteed ones.
- Practice with empty hands. Ask for the cue with no food visible or in your pocket at all, then produce the reward from a separate location after the dog complies. This breaks the visual link between hand and food.
- Use real-life rewards. Access to a sniff, a game of tug, going through the door, these all work as currency once your dog understands the system.

Why doesn't my dog listen to me anymore?
Dogs who “don't listen” almost always have one of these issues:
- Commands were not generalized. The dog learned “sit” in the kitchen with a treat in your hand. They never learned that “sit” means the same thing in the front yard, on a walk, or at the park.
- Commands have been repeated without consequence. “Sit. Sit. SIT.” The dog has learned that the first “sit” is optional.
- The reward dropped off. The dog used to get treats. Now they get nothing. The math has shifted in favor of ignoring you.
- Adolescence. Dogs between 6-18 months go through a phase where previously reliable commands seem to vanish. This is normal and it ends, but it requires consistent reinforcement to weather.
- Mixed signals from different family members. Different cues, different rules, different consequences. The dog has reasonably given up.
