What is reactivity toward family?
Few things are harder than feeling unsafe around your own dog. Reactivity and aggression toward family can come from fear, pain, resource guarding, sensitivity to handling, or learned patterns, and it is rarely about dominance. Understanding the real driver is what makes a plan work.
Safety leads. Avoid the situations that trigger the behavior, do not punish growls and other warnings because they are useful information, and keep children out of any conflict. A veterinary check matters here, because pain is a common and often missed cause of a dog turning on its people.
These cases receive an in-person assessment before any program placement. Many dogs improve a great deal with the right plan, and we are honest about prognosis, safety, and what living with your dog can realistically look like. You do not have to figure this out alone.

Is it normal for a dog to react to a family member but not others?
Yes, and it is actually a useful diagnostic sign rather than something to panic about on its own.
- Dogs are precise trackers of association. They connect specific people with specific experiences with remarkable accuracy, which is exactly why the reactivity is targeted instead of general.
- A narrow pattern is a good sign. It usually means the cause is identifiable: a specific interaction, handling style, or history with that person, rather than a broad temperament issue.
- It still needs to be addressed. Normal does not mean ignore it. Left alone, a targeted pattern can generalize or the person the dog reacts to may stop engaging with the dog at all, which makes things worse.
The goal is rebuilding trust with that specific person using a structured, gradual plan instead of waiting for it to fade.

Any bite history moves the recommendation to Transform Camp instead. A $199 PD360 Assessment, credited toward enrollment in your recommended camp or membership (not toward à la carte bookings or general reservations), determines the right fit for your household.
How do I rebuild trust between my dog and a family member?
Rebuilding trust takes patience and a plan, but it works far more often than families expect.
- Make that person the source of good things. Have them feed every meal, hand out the highest-value treats, or take over the dog's favorite walk. Association rebuilds through repetition.
- Remove the pressure to force contact. No cornering, no forced petting, no “just let them get used to you.” Let the dog choose to approach on their own timeline.
- Layer in calm structured sessions. Short, low-stakes training moments, a few minutes of easy obedience with high rewards, once the dog is voluntarily engaging.
- Track progress honestly. Real change in dog-human trust takes weeks, not days. Small steady gains are the expected pattern.
If progress stalls or the reactivity includes any bite history, bring in a professional assessment rather than continuing to guess.
When does reactivity toward a family member need professional help?
Bring in professional help when any of these are true:
- There has been a bite, even a minor one, at any point
- The reactivity is getting worse rather than better over time
- A child is the target, or a child is present in the household
- You have done consistent, correct at-home work for 30-60 days with no real improvement
- You are managing the household around the dog (separate rooms, constant supervision, avoiding normal family life)

Why is my dog reactive toward one specific person in the house?
Reactivity aimed at one specific family member almost always has a clear driver, even when it doesn't seem like it at first.
- A single bad experience. A startling correction, an accidental step on a paw, being cornered or grabbed, one incident can create a lasting association with that specific person.
- A mismatch in handling style. Someone who is more physical, louder, or more inconsistent with the dog than the rest of the household can end up as the target.
- Medical timing. If reactivity started around when a specific person handles the dog for grooming, medication, or nail trims, rule out pain first.
- The dog reading tension. Dogs pick up on a person's frustration or anxiety and can respond defensively to that energy rather than anything the person actually did.
