In College, your dog picks up 13 new skills at this level and finishes carrying 84 skills in total, every one tracked individually in PD360. Classes run on a 12-week rotating cycle, and each skill moves through Teaching, Reinforcing, Proofing, and Maintenance, so it holds up around real-world distraction. The result is a calmer, more reliable dog you can actually live with.

What College Covers

In College, dogs focus on reinforcing and proofing previously learned behaviors while adding complex and functional behaviors that demonstrate high levels of obedience, problem-solving, and physical control. This level focuses on tasks that are both practical and impressive, showcasing your dog's advanced training and versatility.

Who this level is for

Dogs who have completed High-School and are ready for distance work, functional household behaviors, and the physical-control tricks that demonstrate true advanced training.

What it is

Object retrieve and manipulation unlock endless possibilities for fun, independence, and service.

How we teach it

Building The Retrieve: Start by picking a toy or object you know your dog loves. Celebrate every pick-up and gradually increase duration. As you are rewarding them, back away from your dog so that they follow you. This way you are teaching your dog to bring the item back to you.
Expanding The Command: As your pup gets better with bringing the item back, pair the action with a command. Telling them “hold”or “carry” as they come back to you. The more you use this command, you can start to use it on items other than a ball or a toy.

Mastery: Dog discriminates and retrieves a named object.

The "bow" trick encourages your dog to bend their front legs and touch their nose to the ground, fostering confidence and cooperation. With consistent practice, dogs typically learn this fun trick within a few weeks.

How we teach it

Sit down with your dog standing in front of you.
Use a treat to lure your dog's nose towards the ground.
Mark and reward each time your dog bends their front legs to touch their nose to the ground.
Start adding a hand signal for this command as you are luring them.
Repeat until your dog consistently performs the bow when lured with the treat.
Gradually decrease the treat's proximity to the ground.
Maintain patience and consistency for your dog to learn bowing without treats.

What it is

Teaching your dog to open and close a door is a fun and rewarding trick that can be useful in many situations.

How we teach it

Open a Door:
Introduce your dog to a rope for playful tugging.
Use the verbal cue “pull” right before your dog is about to tug.
Attach the rope to a door handle and leave the door slightly open. Give them a verbal cue to pull and treat them when the door opens.
Closing a Door:
Use the “touch” or “paw” command to teach your dog to put their paws/nose on an open door.
Reward your dog for putting their paws on the door and leaning, prompting the door to close.
Reward your dog for successfully closing the door.

What it is

Introduce Door Stimulus: Tap lightly on the door or ring the doorbell. If your dog remains calm, reward with a treat or praise.

How the College Score Climbs

Every skill your dog knows sits at a stage, and every stage is worth points. As behaviors move up from Teaching to Maintenance the score climbs toward the College graduation target.

Every skill your dog knows sits at one of five stages, and each stage is worth points. A grade level's score is the sum of those stage scores across every skill met so far. As behaviors move up a stage the score climbs, and when it reaches the graduation target the move up is obvious.

The same score follows your dog across Group Classes, DaySchool and DayCamp, private lessons, and boarding, keeping parent, dog, and trainer in sync.

What does my dog learn in College?

College is where your dog reinforces and proofs everything learned in earlier levels while adding complex, functional tasks. Skills include distance commands where your dog holds a position as you move away, the Middle position for tighter close-quarters control, and Send Out for directing your dog away from you with purpose.

This level adds 13 new skills on top of the 84 already tracked, all still cycling through Reinforcing, Proofing, and Maintenance in PD360 until they hold up under real-world distraction.

Is Masters the final grade level before Dogtorate?

Yes, Masters is grade level seven of eight, the last stop before Dogtorate. It's where the complex-routine and freestyle-bridging work that carries directly into Dogtorate gets built, dogs enter after completing College.

Competitive dog-sport teams often extend their time in Masters to fully develop routine work before testing up. Placement is always based on demonstrated skill, confirmed by a PD360 assessment.

Do I need to complete High-School before starting College?

Yes, College builds directly on High-School. Dogs typically arrive already carrying retrieve, refined pivots and pacing, and medical socialization, and College adds distance work and functional household tasks on top of that foundation.

A PD360 assessment confirms your dog is ready for placement, dogs move up by demonstrated skill, never by age or time enrolled. If your dog needs more reps at High-School first, that's a normal step, not a setback.

What are group classes at Partners Dogs?

Group classes at Partners Dogs are weekly small-group training sessions at our Scottsdale and Cave Creek campuses. Dogs progress through 8 cumulative grade levels, from Pre-School to Dogtorate, covering 115 behaviors tracked in the PD360 system.

The curriculum is cumulative: behaviors taught at Elementary are reinforced in Middle-School and proofed in High-School, with each behavior moving through at least four stages of learning. Sessions are taught by master trainers in groups of 6 dogs or fewer, and open enrollment runs year-round, so you can start any week without waiting for a new session. Drop-in classes are $65 per session with no long-term contracts. Rally and Agility specialty classes are also available.
